COUC 890 Leadership and Advocacy in Counselor Education
“This doctoral-level seminar course is designed to foster professional identity as a counselor educator and leadership/service to the counseling profession. There is a focus on leadership principles and theories, including their application to counselor education. Students will work from a self-reflective model in order to discover and assess their own leadership skills and potential and to consider how that potential can be applied to the field of counselor education. Professional, ethical and social advocacy issues are also addressed throughout this course”
Artifact 1 – As a component of COUC 890, this artifact effectively demonstrates the (CACREP Competency a, b, c, d, e, f g, j, k, i). This leadership policy masters leadership competency by identifying personal leadership experience, policies, and personal action plans within counseling.
Artifact 2 – Artifact Two represents a (CACREP competency a, b, c, d, e, g, and h) and demonstrates competency of understanding personal values that will be used to guide as a leader within counseling.
Artifact 3 – Artifact 3 demonstrates an effective ability to develop a leadership action plan. This group project was designed for Chi Sigma Iota with future implementation plans within the counseling honor society. (CACREP competency a, b, c, d, f, g, i, k).
Artifact 4 – Artifact four demonstrates the understanding of leadership and the importance of mentorship and leadership within counseling. The use of networking, mentorship, is vital in growth as a leader within the field of counseling. (CACREP competency a, b, c, d, e, i, j, k, l).

Reflect on the process of developing leadership-level knowledge, skills, and practices in this competency. What has been especially impactful/meaningful/important to you personally and professionally?
Leadership within the field of counseling is instrumental in developing future counselor educators who can contribute to the betterment of counselors and clients. I am a natural-born leader, and throughout my career, I have gravitated into leadership positions, and counseling has been no different. COUC 890 was my one of my favorite doctoral classes. I enjoyed developing and growing in the field of counseling. The textbook, materials, and assignments thoroughly benefited my development as a counselor, educator, and leader.

Describe an area of strength that you have developed while in the program in this area of competency. What is one way you plan to utilize this strength in your vocation?
This leadership experience gave me the confidence to set my goals for running for ACA president. I am the liaison for the Southern Region Division of the American Counseling and President Elect-Elect for the North Carolina Counseling Association. Within each of these roles, as evidenced by artifacts within leadership competency, I have served in various capacities such as secretary, graduate division president, human rights committee, advocacy and legislation, military and family, supervision, and the North Carolina Counseling Journal. I have served within leadership for NCCA for the last seven years demonstrating professional commitment to our field.

Describe an area of challenge/growth opportunity in this competency area. What is your plan to develop excellence in this area?
As a leader within the North Carolina Counseling Association, I face challenges among leadership, board policies, bylaws, governance, and fiduciary responsibilities. I will continue to work and demonstrate excellence as a leader by staying committed to counselors' and counselor educators’ needs within professional counseling.

Reflect on how faith in Christ relates to this competency.
God has used me in Leadership. When I feel that I am not adequate, have self-doubt or failing to trust myself as a leader, I rely on my faith and remember that God led me, and I will continue to be a servant leader. I pray that God continues to use me for his intended purpose. I pray and ask God to use me as his vessel.
